The Annual Tears and Ashes tour visits a different part of Rockingham Country area each year.  Unionist homes, called "Depots" and used to hide escapees from the Confederate Army were among the stops.  These homes were a part of a well designed escape route called the "Unionist Underground Railroad."  Thousands of escapes traveled on these routes to the North; this tour related harrowing experiences of hiding out, narrow escapes, and heroic actions.  Some also were captured.

A number of these homes were visited on the 2005 Tears and Ashes Tour along with other major Civil War sites and monuments. At the site of the killing of Union Officer, Lieut. Miegs, a re-enactment was staged.
