The spring Lecture of the Valley Brethren-Mennonite Heritage Center marked the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War with the commemoration of attempts to get the pacifist, anti-slavery, pro-Union Mennonites and Brethren to enlist in the Confederate Army. Steve Longenecker, history professor at Bridgewater College, discussed “Shenandoah Anabaptists and the Secession Crisis” on Sunday. The service included the re-enactment of a Confederate officer striding into the Sunday morning worship service in June 1861 to instruct all the men between the ages of 18 and 45 to enlist in the Confederate Army the following week.
