December 17, 18: The 1850s era dinners planned by Sonya and Wendell Eller sold out early again. Diners enjoyed a ride from the Welcome Center to the Burkholder Myers House in Harvey Varner’s horse-pulled wagon where they received appetizers in the warmth of a fire in the Wash House hearth. Walking on a lantern-lighted pathway to the Great Room of the Big Red House, they were then introduced to Martin and Rebecca Burkholder who built the house in 1854. During a break between the main course and dessert, Linda Waggy as Rebecca and Paul Roth as Henry Burkholder, Martin’s cousin, acted out scenes from Civil War days. The full course meal, prepared and served by the Rhodes Sisters, included a tossed salad, rolls, baked chicken, a green bean casserole, dried corn, mashed potatoes and gravy, relishes and pie a la mode.
December 10 and 11: Clear crisp weather on December 9-10, aided by a full moon, doubled Candlelight Tour participation over last year, according to Linda Bomberger, event coordinator. Paying participants for the two nights totaled 206, and with all the re-enactors and helpers, attendance was considerably higher. The event featured Christmas music, with some groups singing with guitar accompaniment and other groups, like the bell choir in the Whitmer Schoolhouse, harmonizing with instruments. Other re-enactors included quilters, an apple schnitzer, a Conscientious Objector in the Wash House cellar, blacksmiths plying their trade, pie makers, and donkey and goats in the fenced cattle yard.
