Author's Review, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. at the Massanutten Regional Library
Dr. Stephen Longenecker, author of Shenandoah Religion, Outsiders and the Mainstream 1716 - 1865 will present a review of his book on September 25 at 7:00 p.m. at the Massanutten Regional Library in Harrisonburg. Dr. Longenecker is a Professor of History and Chairs the Department of History and Political Science at Bridgewater College.
This study asks why some Protestants struggle to stay on the margins when the majority embrace the concept of the larger culture. It addresses reasons why some find it easier to remain at odds with the world and why some fellowships, generation after generation, remain on the fringes of society while others slowly sink into the majority.
The Shenandoah Valley between 1700 and 1865 is an ideal location to ask these big questions because of its pluralism, which included groups of varying size and theology and representatives of diverse ethnicity. Shenandoah society was a little quilt, or salad bowl, with a fascinating assortment of patches of all shapes and sizes. Shenandoah Religion argues that those who defined outsiderness so that it impacted laity in daily life stood the best chance of remaining nonconformists.
The book is available at the Bridgewater College bookstore. His review is sponsored by VBMHC.
